Hiking routes & mountain tours
Hiking in Salzburger Land
The Königgut is also the perfect starting point for a real hiking holiday. Situated in the centre of Salzburger Land and on the border to Berchtesgadner Land, Wals-Siezenheim with the 4-star Hotel Königgut is the ideal home base for hiking in the surrounding mountains and scaling many a peak. Just outside the gates of Salzburg, the Untersberg massif beckons in the south, the Osterhorn group of the Salzkammergut mountains in the east and the Staufen in the west.
As a passionate hiker and mountain expert, our boss Johann Jr. has put together a wide variety of tours and prepared them for you as our guests. He has also hiked every route personally. Here you will find his "Best Of Hiking Atlas" around the Hotel Königgut. The hikes are also summarised in a small hiking book and in a card game, which you can obtain from reception at the Hotel Königgut.
Our receptionists and the manager will also be happy to advise you personally in order to filter out the best hikes for your requirements and wishes!
Mountain tours
Hike up the Zwiesel
Starting point: Padinger Alm car park in Bad Reichenhall
Car park: Nonn 79, 83435 Bad Reichenhall
- Starting point: 670 m
- Destination: Zwiesel 1782 m
- Difference in altitude: 1112 m
- Total walking time: 6 hours
- Total route length: 15 km
If you are looking for a challenging tour, the hike to the Zwieselalm could be an attractive tour for you. You start in Bad Reichenhall at the Padinger Alm car park, where you keep left through the forest in the direction of Listsee. After the forest, you join the Listseestraße and keep right towards the lake. The route then follows the forest road uphill to the Muliweg and on to the Zwieselalm with its stunning views. If you still haven't had enough, continue along a narrow path, first to the Zennokopf and then to the Zwiesel, which offers a marvellous panoramic view. The descent is along the same path back to the car park.
Hike up the Untersberg 1
Tour: Salzburger Hochthron from Marktschellenberg via the Toni Lenz Hütte and the Tomas Eder Steig with gondola valley ride.
- Starting point: Passthurm car park 480 m
- Destination: Salzburger Hochthron 1853 m
- Difference in altitude: 1373 m
- Total walking time: approx. 5 - 6 hours
- Total route length: 7 km
The hike, which takes between 5 and 6 hours, starts at the car park at the Schellenberg Pass Tower. At the beginning, the path climbs steeply uphill and leads through the forest above the Rothmannbach stream. After approx. 1 hour's walking time, the path joins a track. Even in spring, you may come across snow fields from time to time. Sturdy footwear is therefore highly recommended. In relatively steep serpentines, the path leads through rocky terrain to the Toni Lenz hut at 1411 metres, which you reach after another 1.5 hours. The next important point 15 minutes later is the Schellenberg ice cave, which can be visited every hour between 10 am and 4 pm from Whitsun to the end of October as part of a guided tour. The tour leads past the ice cave on the left until you join the Thomas Eder Steig. This initially leads slightly uphill and then leads steeply through several tunnels to the Mittagsscharte. Nomen is omen here, because even those who start early are usually not here until around midday. The route continues upwards in serpentines and through a mountain pine area to the ski run. The route then leads over some rocks from the south directly up to the Salzburger Hochthron. Finally done! Now it's time for a well-deserved stop at the Hochalm before taking the Untersberg cable car back down into the valley. Finally, there is a 45-minute walk from the valley station back to the car park.
Hike up the Untersberg 2
Tour: Zeppezauerhaus from Glanegg via the Dopplersteig.
Car park: Rosittenstraße / Fürstenbrunn /5082
- Starting point: Glanegg 460 m
- Destination: Zeppezauerhaus 1663 m
- Difference in altitude: 1203 m
- Total walking time incl. descent: via Reitsteig - 6.5 hrs.
- Total route length: approx. 9 km
The Untersberg can be hiked via several routes. Our second suggestion for conquering Salzburg's local mountain is the tour via the Dopplersteig to the Zeppezauerhaus. This time we start in Glanegg. First, head from Grödig towards Fürstenbrunn, where you turn left onto a gravel path into the forest, keep left again at the bridge and follow the "Dopplersteig" sign. The trail is a tough one and delivers what it promises, namely double the effort. This means starting slowly, as it quickly becomes very steep and very strenuous. The route runs steadily uphill along the Rosittenbach stream. After three quarters of an hour's walking, the so-called "ladders to heaven" begin. The path then forks, with the left-hand path leading over the Schellenbergsattel, while the right-hand path leads to the Dopplerwand. There is a natural refreshment stop here and a small fountain invites you to drink. The route continues first in serpentines, then over wooden ladders and rock steps through the wall. You should definitely be free from giddiness here, as the route descends vertically. To ensure safety, this section of the route is equipped with a rope to hold on to throughout. Here, too, you are reminded to climb the steps and ladders slowly.
In the middle of the trail, you can take a break in a small cave. At the end of the Dopplersteig you come to the Reitsteig, which leads directly to the Zeppezauerhaus in 15 minutes.
You can either take the cable car down into the valley from Geiereck to St. Leonhard and the bus to Glanegg - or return on foot via the Reitsteig in around 3 hours over an almost infinite number of steps. Another nice alternative is to continue along the Arnoweg and hike via the Mittagsscharte and the Toni Lenz Hütte to Markt Schellenberg.
Hike up the Hochstaufen
Tour: To the Hochstaufen via Steinerne Jäger
Starting point: Padinger Alm car park 670 m
- Destination: Hochstaufen 1771 m
- Difference in altitude: 1101 m
- Total walking time: 5 - 6 hours
- Total route length: 9 km
The challenging mountain tour over the Steinernen Jäger to the Hochstaufen requires surefootedness and a head for heights. The normal route via the Bartlmahd to the Hochstaufen also makes certain demands on the fitness of the climbers. The destination is the summit of the Hochstaufen, which lies at 1,750 metres, and the Reichenhaller Haus Alpine Club hut directly below it.
The route starts near the Rupertus Therme thermal baths in Kurfürstenstraße in Bad Reichenhall. Cross Loferer Straße and the Saalach and turn diagonally left onto a forest path. Continue past the Kurhaus and towards the hamlet of Berer. After the junction to Vocker, the path turns right and now zigzags steeply uphill to the Padingeralm. After the track, a smaller path follows, which you follow until you pass the Buchmahd and shortly afterwards reach the pass between the Hochstaufen and the Steinernen Jägern. Then continue right to the Hockeralm, but keep left along the stony ridge to the summit of the Hochstaufen.
After a short rest at the Reichenhaller Haus, continue along the ridge and then descend in a westerly direction, crossing a scree field. The route zigzags steeply downhill, over the Bartlmahd and along the scree field. At the lower end of the field, turn left onto a path that continues to descend, at the end of which you reach the road above the Padingeralm. Now return to the car park in the same way as the ascent, but in reverse order.
Please note: This tour requires surefootedness and a head for heights!
Hike up the Schafberg
Car park: Public bathing area at Mondsee - Kienbergwand Landesstrasse
Tour: From Kreuzstein via Eisenauer Alm to Himmelpforte
- Starting point: Car park public bathing area Kienbergwand Landesstrasse 503 m
- Destination: Himmelspforte 1780 m
- Difference in altitude: 1277 m
- Total walking time: 6-7 hours
- Total route length: 13 km
Enjoy this beautiful and eventful hike in the Salzkammergut mountains in Salzburg. The first part to the Eisenauer Alm is not very demanding and already offers wonderful views over Lake Mondsee. From the Eisenauer Alm, the route heads into alpine terrain. Alpine experience is necessary.
The starting point is the car park at the public bathing area on Lake Mondsee. From there, the trail climbs a little steeper into the forest, where you will soon pass the Kreuzstein waterfall, the first highlight of the tour! The route then continues through the forest, over several small streams and a bridge construction to a hut, from where there is a wonderful view over Lake Mondsee. After a few minutes you reach the Eisenauer Alm with the Buchberghütte. This route is also suitable for children.
At the Eisenauer Alm, turn right across alpine meadows back into the forest and continue steeply uphill to a small lake. From there, the trail continues to the right under the Schafberg summit. The last section - the so-called Himmelspforte - is challenging: the steep and rocky path should only be tackled in dry weather. From the top of the Schafberg, there is another wonderful view over Lake Mondsee and Lake Wolfgangsee.
Please note: this tour requires surefootedness and a head for heights!
