The New Year's Eve celebrations in Salzburg's old town are a real highlight. The festivities are centred around the majestic Salzburg Cathedral. The Christmas market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz is extended to include Kapitelplatz especially for New Year's Eve. A large stage with live bands awaits you there, while international fireworks on screens heighten the anticipation of midnight. At 4 p.m., the Festungsprangerstutzenschützen will fire the New Year's gun from Hohensalzburg Fortress, followed by a salute from the Citizens' Guard from the Staatsbrücke. At midnight on the dot, the bells of Salzburg Cathedral ring in the New Year, accompanied by a magnificent firework display over Hohensalzburg Fortress. To ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors, private fireworks displays are not permitted in the city of Salzburg.

On 1 January, the New Year is welcomed with lively sounds on Kapitelplatz, while the food stalls of the market around the cathedral are open until 18:00.
