The Mondsee Basilica.
Parish Church of St Michael.
The idyllic village of Mondsee lies in the heart of the Salzkammergut, just 30 minutes by car from the Hotel Königgut. Numerous cafés and a beautifully designed lakeside promenade invite you to linger.
The Mondsee Basilica fascinates with and without the Sound of Music! Ever since the images of this special building went around the world in the American film musical "The Sound of Music", tourists from overseas in particular have been drawn to the parish church of St Michael. It only became a basilica in 2005 and was extensively renovated until 2009.
The basilica owes its worldwide fame to a very special scene that was filmed in Mondsee: It is the wedding scene in which Georg Ludwig von Trapp (played by Christopher Plummer) marries the novice Maria (Julie Andrews).
Benedictine collegiate church.
The parish church of St Michael in Mondsee is worth a visit as a special architectural monument in Austria even without "The Sound of Music": the unique Benedictine collegiate church is one of the largest Gothic churches in Austria and has a magnificent interior.
After turbulent, pre-Romanesque construction phases, today's Gothic church was built in the 15th century under Abbot Benedikt Eck; it is part of the monastery founded by Bavarian Duke Odilo in 748. In the late 17th century, the famous baroque sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler was responsible for the splendid baroque interior of the church - one of the most important sculptors of the baroque period, who lived in Mondsee for over 44 years as a native of Switzerland.
